The View From Here: How much shorter?
Journalism sucks. It’s not that all of it sucks, but all this new shit just irks me. Print isn’t dead but we sure act like it is.
Not to say that only print newspapers are good, there are credible platforms online. Some of them are more credible than others. And yet most media platforms are enhancing their content to appease returning and new readers.
People think that celebrity news is news, when in reality it’s not. Headlines about “Brangelina” cluttered the internet and shows like TMZ, extending even to actual local news stations.
Articles online are more accessible, free, and can be read at anyone’s leisure., but the problem is more than making it easier for the readers.
Content is also “easier” to generate.
Take Buzzfeed, for example. There are full length articles produced that are simple lists like “19 Tumblr Posts That Prove Cats Are Actually Perfect.” That’s cute and cuddly, but that’s not prominent news or impactful in any way, shape or form. This is what brings down the credibility of their content.
I don’t want to get my news from Snapchat or Twitter, but news organizations know that other people my age will want to. It’s a good call to cater to millennials, but ten second clips and 140 word summaries aren’t particularly satisfying for me, and they shouldn’t be.
Condensing complicated issues into exciting tidbits of information is what causes misinterpretation and confusion to the public.
This opinion is under 300 words long, how can so many people decide get their news from something shorter than this?
