Although Rev. Terry Jones’ controversial and highly publicized “Burn A Koran Day” would have been protected under the first amendment, the spirit of it all was absolutely un-American and unjustified.
Jones’ theatrical performance, which was planned for 9/11 at his church in Gainesville, Florida, was canceled just two days before the holy books were to go up in smoke as a result of what Jones’ thought was a compromise made between Imam Musri, head of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, and himself to have the mosque being built at ground zero moved to a new location.
For the hot-headed Jones, a mosque being built at ground zero would not only be adding salt to the wound after the tragic events of 9-11, but also symbolize fear of and submission to the Muslim community. The ignorant pastor firmly believes that Muslims are the devil, and that all who have faith in the Quran are also supporters of the attacks to the Twin Towers. To Jones, anyone tolerant of the religion is un-American and afraid to rise up against those damnable.
The real fear was that if the protest were to have taken place, the lives of American soldiers in Muslim countries would be jeopardized. And they probably would have. Though Jones had and still has every right to burn the Quran, exercising that right wouldn’t be worth the risk. Repaying violence for violence only invites more conflict rather than any resolution. Most Americans, obviously not Jones, learned back in second grade that two wrongs don’t make a right. Guess he was too busy burning school books in his backyard.
What is most disturbing about Jones’ desire to burn the Quran is that he firmly believes that Jesus would have done the same thing too. The Holy Bible tells that God is Love. One of Jesus’ most popular teachings is that, “Thou shall not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.” It makes me wonder whether or not Jones got his information on Christianity the same way he did on the Muslim religion- from YouTube.
What happened on 9-11 was very tragic and will go down in history as the worst thing to of happened on American soil. But blame should not be placed on the entire Muslim religion but rather the radical believers of the bunch. Should all Christians be dubbed hateful and prejudiced because of Rev. Terry Jones?
