Peter, Winston, Ray and Egon are back and this time there’s a new Ghostbuster with them: you.
In Ghostbusters: The Video Game it’s your job to help the guys stop another Manhattan invasion from the paranormal side.
Reprising their roles from the Ghostbusters movies that we grew up with are Bill Murray as Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz, Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler, and Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore.
Furthermore, the game’s story and script are also done by the original writers, Aykroyd and Ramis.
The story is practically the third installment in the Ghostbusters saga. It serves as a sequel to the original movies, following the same linear timeline.
Expect plenty of Easter Eggs and References in the game that elude to the previous events of the films.
If you are a Ghostbusters buff you will not be disappointed with this game at all. This game stays strong and true to the source material and bringing back all the humor and ghost busting that began in 1984.
The game play is set in third person view. The HUD is actually one of the coolest I have ever seen, as it is actually incorporated into your proton pack (You know, those things on your back that house the proton energy used to dissipate ghosts).
Your proton pack shows how much energy can be exerted before overheating as well as a health indicator. If one of your teammates happens to get knocked out and needs reviving you will notice an icon with their face will also appear on screen with an arrow that points in their direction. Likewise, if you need reviving, you will see the icons of your active teammates in relation to your position.
However, your camera will be centered on the floor so you can never really tell how far they actually are from you. If you and all your active teammates fall then it’s checkpoint reload time. Sadly, these long loading times are this games biggest flaw.
When playing this game you can choose from one of two modes, the campaign or multiplayer. Sadly, you can only play the campaign by yourself. Still, the A.I. of your teammates is pretty on point in terms of reviving you when you are knocked out or capturing ghosts.
As for the multiplayer, it’s everything you would expect from a multiplayer Ghostbusters game. You choose your Ghostbuster and you and your friends are free to hunt as many ghosts as you like. Just be careful not to cross the streams.
Your arsenal in this game is awesome. Obviously you have you standard issue proton pack and ghost trap combo.
However, being the rookie also entails that you be Egon’s guinea pig, testing his new equipment. You essentially get four different weapons, each with two firing modes.
You start with only the proton stream and not too far into the game you get its second firing mode, the boson dart. After that, whenever you get a new weapon you automatically unlock both firing modes. You can also purchase upgrades for these weapons. You earn cash by collecting bounties on each ghost you defeat.
There are two ways to take out enemies in this game. Some enemies must be wrangled and trapped in a ghost trap while others simply just need to be brought to zero health. In any case you get paid, so make sure to take out as many of them nasty critters as you can.
The only thing I felt this game really lacked was a strong personality for your character, the rook. With the other four being so established and defined quipping about it was sad to see that the rook never really joins in the conversation. I would love to see a sequel to the game and hope that they take that into consideration.
I mean, I loved hearing the guys in the background but it would be much better to have been a part of their conversations. I was also a little disappointed that there was no driving level. I would have loved to sit behind the wheel of Ecto-1, just like in the good old NES days, if you can remember those days.
Still, none of these flaws take away from the game. I just feel they would add so much more to it. By far this game met all my expectations. And I will tell you, I set the bar really high as Ghostbusters is one of my fondest franchises.
Every character was spot on and they were able to do a lot of things they probably couldn’t in a movie.
If you ever loved Ghostbusters and own a videogame console this game is a must play. Now when are we gonna get a sequel?
