The Skyline Trojans baseball team won 12-3 in their home-game against Mission College amidst a chilling windstorm on Tuesday.Upon completion of the singing of the National Anthem, the crowd applauded and the ball game began. The first couple of innings started off slow, with neither team scoring any points until the fifth inning.”The first couple of innings are to try to get the pitcher’s confidence up with insurance runs,” David Gregory, #24 and infielder for the Skyline Trojans, explains. Mission was the first team to score a run, but after that it was Skyline that ran the show. Following the fifth inning, both teams were tied, 1-1, but then in the sixth Skyline took a 3-1 lead.Gregory said what got the team going around this time was that coach Dino Nomicos brought the team together for a motivational speech. In the top of the seventh, Mission scored two quick runs to tie the game once again, but then Skyline took off like the wind and never looked back. By the end of the seventh, Skyline was sitting on a comfortable 8-3 lead. After denying Mission any runs in the eighth, the Trojans stepped up to the plate and hammered four more runs, holding on to a 12-3 lead going into the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, pitcher Greg Gonzalez, #3, gave up no runs, ending the game with the final score being 12-3. The main difference in this game actually turned out to be the wind. Whenever a batter would hit a fly ball, the wind would change the direction and location of the ball, making it nearly impossible for the outfielders to judge where the ball will end up and therefore to catch it. Skyline hit many more fly balls, so what under regular conditions would have been easy catches, turned into doubles and singles. By the game’s end, Mission had six missed catches, whereas Skyline only had one.”It was a good wind for us” Dino Nomicos, the head men’s baseball coach, said. The wind was really blowing strong, causing several delays of games. Hits that would have been good were fouls, the sand would blow into people’s faces, the pitches would become invalid, and many players’ hats would fly off. The sand was even hosed during the game, but it was to no avail. One other determining factor in the game was a few missed throws to a person guarding a base, which turned what would have been outs into doubles. The win last Tuesday was an important one for the team. As Gregory said, “This win put us on the right road to the playoffs.”The Trojan’s next game will be on Thursday, April 16, against Hartnell College in Salinas. Gregory says that it is an advantage playing at home because they practice there everyday and also the ground is turf instead of real grass, so “there are no bad hops.” Hopefully, the Trojans will keep their winning streak alive. If Tuesday was any indication, they should have no problem.
