Skyline Trojans Men’s Basketball team faced the Chabot Gladiators on Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
Chabot opened the game with the first basket, but Skyline quickly gained control of the game. Skyline challenged Chabot’s every move which forced the Gladiators to take outside shots and turnover the ball.
On offense, the Trojans worked the ball around the ark until they had an open lane or uncontested shot that they liked. Both teams did very well in sinking their jump-shots throughout the first half
Chabot’s strong point in the game was dominating the offensive glass. Second chance shots were how they scored most of their points to keep them in the game. Although the Gladiators controlled the boards in the game with their height advantage, that didn’t stop Ronny of the Freeman brothers (#21) from showing off his speed by stealing the ball and slamming it in the bucket on an open-lane fast break.
The Trojans had the lead at the end of the first half but Chabot quickly gained command giving them their only lead in the game since their first two points. The Trojan’s casually regained and maintained the lead with six minutes left in the game thanks to the Freeman brothers, who combined for a total score of 35 points on the night.
Skyline sealed the deal in the last few minutes of the game by getting to the line multiple times with his percentage free throws. The final score was 81-71.
“It’s a huge win for the season,” Coach Justin Piergrossi said in an interview after the victory. “We are really tough to beat.” This important win brought the Trojans to a record of 5 – 6 for their league.
Skyline’s next game is on the road against Cañada on Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m. The last time the two met was on Skyline’s turf where the Trojans secured a victory of 62 – 49. This is also an important game for the Trojan’s if they want to advance into the post-season.
