You have the ability to make a change in the world and the environment and your righteous cause begins right here at Skyline. In the big picture it’s all the little things you do that matter most. “It takes consciousness to change habits,” Professor Katharine Harer says. “We need to change the consciousness of all of us.”Doing something as easy as throwing your recyclables in the corresponding bins provided around campus shows you are willing to make the change necessary to preserve our Earth.Clubs around campus are concerned about these issues. On Nov. 19 the Honors Club, Phi Theta Kappa and the Environmental Club came together on campus to address these problems and potential solutions. “We’ve united our clubs to spread environmental awareness across Skyline,” says Beta Theta Omicron President Ashley Good. “As a learning institution, we should be leading by example.”The collaboration event offered informing “Greenify Skyline” pamphlets and the clubs handed out free green bags, corn pens, biodegradable cups with free coffee and energy saving light bulbs.Putting recyclables in recycling bins is the first step towards ‘greenification.’ As a society, we should be paying close attention to the products we use. Using disposable products regularly is probably one of the best things we could be doing to help the environment around campus. “We need to educate the student body of disposable product choices and their costs,” Leo Szeto says. “We hope that students will unite and get the cafeteria to start using these recyclable goods.” Bruce Thompson added, “There’s not a lot of difference in cost between what we’re currently using and what we could be using.”Overall, we as a Skyline community are not the worst inhabitants on the planet. Though we don’t all take into consideration the types of cups we’re using or what types of pens we write with, we do make somewhat of an effort to keep our campus clean and environmentally safe. “We’re a lot more environmentally conscious than most places,” Thompson says. We’re on the right path. We just need to stay focused and want to make the difference. The world is in your hands.
