The Skyline women’s soccer team won their first conference game against Las Positas on Friday here at Skyline, with a final score of four to one.
“This was very important to the team and it was our major goal”, said Coach Kevin Corsiglia.
Skyline started the game off by scoring the first goal. Soon after, Las Positas scored their first – and only – goal of the game.
Skyline’s next goal came from # 6, Laura Cremen, who plays center mid. This goal was scored from a relatively long distance, obviously catching the opposing goalie off guard. With only four minutes and thirty seconds left in the first half, # 2, Amanda Downing, scored Skyline’s third goal.
Once the time on the scoreboard reached two minutes, it stopped and the referee kept the official time on the field, but nothing major happened during these two minutes. It was then half time, with the score at three to one.
During the half-time huddle, Coach Corsiglia told the team to focus on the angles of their shots and to keep an eye out for the other team’s most dangerous players.
He finished by saying, “The final score is not going to be three to one. You have got to still be hungry.”
The second half began furiously, with Skyline dominating the ball. Skyline made a total of four attempts at the goal before Downing scored another goal, bringing the score to four to one with eight minutes left in the half. Skyline was then able to retain possession of the ball and prevent the other team from scoring for the remainder of the game.
During this time, # 20, Holly Anderson, hurt her knee badly and had to be examined by the on-field nurse. At the end of the game, each team got into a group, cheered the other team’s name, and then marched and high-fived each of the other team members.
After the game, Cremin and # 10, Isharene “Isha” Malave, who is a center forward, gave their thoughts about the game.
“I thought we played well as a team” said Cremin, with Malave adding “All we practiced worked”.
When asked what she did to prepare for this game, Cremin replied, “Lots of drills with their new formation and also soccer school”.
Isha said she listened to music and practiced a lot in order to prepare for this game. This win has given the team much confidence.
Cremin boldly claimed, “We will win the rest of the games,” and, “The best is yet to come.”
According to Coach Corsiglia, the team’s keys to success was their aggressive approach and getting a lot of players in the penalty box, which allowed the team to stay close to the goal.
