Based off of Norse mythology you play through Too Human as Balder. However, I felt the story of the game in campaign mode was really weak and disappointing. In fact, it hardly kept my attention at all. On the other hand, the game play is phenomenal and highly addicting. Once you actually start playing it is near impossible for you to stop.
Upon starting the game you chose one of five job classes: champion, defender, commando, bio-engineer, and berserker. With a strong RPG element to the game each class offers a unique upgradeable set of abilities. The champion is an all around character with no particular focus. The bio engineer is essentially a healing unit that does minor damage but has powerful support abilities. The defender acts as a tank, protecting your partners by taking a majority of the damage. The berserker offers high offense at the cost of defensive ability. My favorite of all the classes, the commando, focuses on ranged attacks.
Immediately after choosing your class you get thrown into the action. The game play feels like a mix of Devil May Cry and Gauntlet Legends. At all times you have a short and a long range weapon equipped. There are three types of weapons for each of those categories. Your short range weapons include swords, staffs and hammers. These are your primary weapons and are used as your main offensive throughout the game. The long range weapons are one of three types of guns; dual pistols, a riffle, or a heavy powerful cannon. Any job class is free to use these weapons so the game offers a variety of ways to take down enemy units.
As you progress through the game you are also given a choice between making your fighter a human or cybernetic warrior. The human path focus more on combo based attacks where as the cybernetic is more focused on ranged attacks. Once again every class is free to choose either path.
Let me stress that this is a really addicting and fun game. However, it is not perfect. The game has a really poor camera system. This leads to many problems. For example when shooting at one enemy the slightest movement can cause you to turn your back on them leaving you exposed for an attack. The auto lock will sometimes pick up on an already deceased enemy or quickly throw you off of the enemy you are currently attacking. However, Too Human is a planned trilogy. With that in mind we can hope they take care of some of these problems.
As I said before Too Human is a planned trilogy and they already have some plans for the next one. The story will pick up where this game leaves off. However, they do plan to take make your play through of the first game more than just a knowledge of the plot. They are attempting to make the characters you use in the first game portable to the sequels. Hopefully that works out cause I’d love to start the next one right off the bat with my commando or champion.
This game isn’t a generic hack and slash. Sure it has those basic elements. However, add those elements to the leveling of your characters and it becomes so much more. With all the classes and paths to choose for each character this game is worth picking up.
