Skyline students tend to worry about grades, test, and term papers; among many other personal issues. Yoga class is the perfect class to help students relieve some of the stress that school can cause them. The main purpose of this class is to obtain a state of meditation, in which the students are able to relax and forget about their concerns.
Different long held postures are done, to stretch the body and to tighten all the muscles. These postures help build flexibility and strength to the upper body, specifically arms and core. Some of the most popular postures are the downward dog, fish, plow, warrior pose, and the bridge. Yoga is a great work out to maintain your body healthy, without having to sweat. It is a great way to get in shape without having to run for miles and miles. In this class, students are taught a technique to control their breathing, which can also be used while running. Feeling healthy is very important for your mind. According to Skyline yoga instructor, Cecilia Tom, “Yoga is about bringing life to balance thorough different exercises for the mind and body.” By bringing balance we can feel better and actually, function better. There aren’t any specific requirements to join this class. This class is for everybody, whether an athlete or not. Tom, strongly suggests students that suffer from stress, to attend her yoga class because it will help them cope with it. In her class, “students are able to learn how to let go,” said Tom. The class starts with a quick meditation, which helps students concentrate and forget about all their concerns. Athletes are also recommended to take this class because, according to Tom, it is healthy to combine yoga with an extra sport. By doing so, you obtain a balance between the two different work outs. Some students in her class took this class because it was a requirement, but after time, they realized how good it is. “It has made me change my breathing pattern when I walk or jog”, Sanjani Kumar said.
Kumar has learned how to concentrate in this class. She feels a really close connection with her teacher, “Professor Tom is very patient with us, and explains everything in detail,” Kumar said. Although, there is not a diet required for the class, Tom said, “Once you start feeling healthy, you will automatically want to eat and do healthier things.” Yoga is purification for the mind and body, and it is very satisfactory and relaxing. It is recommended to do it several times a week, to maintain your body and mind fresh. Eventually after doing yoga for a while, it will become a necessity to the body. Tom’s class takes place in building three, room 106. Her class is every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:35- 1:50pm. She will also be teaching a summer class, four days a week at 10:30 in the morning. It is recommended to take yoga class in the morning, because it helps you get through your day, by relaxing your mind. “Yoga is a great way to start your day”, Tom said. Students are very pleased with the outcome of the class; they enjoy it and apply what they learn in class to their everyday life. Yoga student, Jessica Kurtenbach said, “After you begin doing yoga, you will want to do it for the rest of your life.”
