Lets go back. Lets go back 10 years to 1997 when yours truly was just a mild-mannered 7th grader, with and odd taste in music that ranged from 60’s psychedelic all the way down to folk. But at that time I was rocking out hard to The Spice Girls. Yes that right- you read correctly- The Spice Girls (who just got back together for a short reunion tour…which I am lucky enough to be going to).
They were fun, funky and danceable; all the trade marks of a good disco dance pop group. Despite what people say I think these girls rocked and still do, sure they had a formula for there music, but all pop music does. In fact for the most part, if you listen closely all, music has a formula to.
What I truly enjoy about The Spice Girls is the positive image they gave to the girls who listened to them, they preached “Girl Power!” and the fact that a girl band could be just as powerful and entertaining as any boy band. But providing something totally different instead of crushes, they provided women that girls wanted to emulate, whether it was Baby Spice’s sweetness , Posh Spice’s classiness and killer style, Ginger Spice’s kind of wild-child streak, Sporty Spice’s willingness to throw down with the boys and get down and dirty, or my personal favorite Scary Spice with her in your face take nothing from no body attitude.
Back then people said girls singing songs about having lovers and going out for a night on the town was a horrible influence on young girls. I would have to disagree because it was telling girls that it was okay to have fun and live life. Also during this time mass amounts of boy bands where singing songs about making love to ladies but no on said a thing about that because they were guys. It’s the classic double standard.
But what made The Spice Girls truly rock in my mind were their catchy hooks and lyrics, which created great songs to sing along to and dance to as well. My personal favorite song of theirs actually never went number one in the USA, “Stop”. It was an up beat fast paced song about slowing down in life and smelling the roses and having some fun which is made blatantly obvious by the lyrics
“Stop right now thank you very much, I need somebody with a human touch. Hey you always on the run. Gotta slow it down baby, gotta have some fun.”
So put on your plat form shoes and get down to some disco brit pop.
