What is wrong with people today? Well to tell the truth lots of things are wrong with people today. But one thing in particular bothers me most of all and that is how sensitive people have become. How easily offended people are today, and how if you step one little toe over the edge of political correctness then whabam! You’re a marked man (or women), because you said something that hurt some ones feelings or offended them. Well folks I ask you what is wrong with offending people? Why should we fear the words that are coming out of our mouths? I am not saying that we should not think before we speak I am just saying that we should be able to speak our mind.
Now…think about this, have you ever thought something during a situation but didn’t say anything because you thought people might get offended? I think everyone has; because I know I have. But as of lately, I have realized you may be saving people’s feelings, and also avoiding confrontation. But with this mentality does anything ever get changed? No! It does not. If the founding fathers had kept their yaps shut because they where afraid that they might hurt the kings feelings then…well then there wouldn’t be this wonderful country that we have today, a country where people are free to speak their minds, but are currently afraid to because some people might not like it.
If you talk to me you know I speak my mind, and am not sorry for many of the things I say, (unless they are genuinely uncalled for) why should I have to apologize for my beliefs, my feelings, just because they don’t meet with the norms of society? Because they may hurt some ones feelings? Because they are not thoughts of fluffy bunnies and that every one is equal and that the world is made out of glitter, rainbows and moonshine? (Though I do know some people are made of glitter and moonshine and they are some fantastic people.) I do not think I should have to apologize for my beliefs, I will never apologize for being a Libertarian, I will never apologize for identifying with and enjoying Catholicism, I also will not let the fear that I might offend people stop me from saying the things I want to say.
All I can ask you to do dear friends, is open up your mind to things that the majority of people might think are politically, don’t just shut them out and say that’s mean you shouldn’t say that. Or just totally disregard them because at face value they might seem like they might be hurtful. So next time someone says something mean or offensive to you don’t go running to your mom or pops, stand up and defend yourself and your beliefs.
I will leave you with this. A wise man once said to me “You have the right to say what you want; you don’t have the right not to be offended.”
