The candidates have been announced for the upcoming Associated Student of Skyline College elections which will be held May 14-18. The two candidates running for President are Lauren Hernandez and Lindsay D’Amico.
Anjelica Gacutan is running unopposed for Commissioner of Activities, and Wendy Smith is also running unopposed for Commissioner of Publicity. So, the only real competition is for president.
Voting for the ASSC elections is being done completely online this year, as you can either log on from the internet at home or head up to the Cyber lounge to vote. “We are going to decorate the cyber lounge in red, white, and blue and set aside at least one computer for voting” said Silvia Cervantes, current Vice-president of ASSC.
Voting starts Monday May 14 at 8 a.m. and users can log on using their G-number and PIN to vote anytime until Friday May 18 at 2 p.m. After voting, the students name will be entered into a raffle as the ASSC is giving away a 30GB iPod, an iPod nano and an iPod shuffle.
There are no scheduled events such as debates or speeches, but candidates will be campaigning in the quad to get their agendas and goals out so the students can make informed decisions on whom they would like to vote for.
“It us up to them to campaign in the quad,” Amory Cariadus said. “There will be a brief place for candidate statements on the ballot.” The governing body of the ASSC is responsible for planning student activities, adopting and supervising the ASSC budget, participating in college committees and sharing in the development of college policies, according to the student handbook.
“Their main responsibility is to ensure student representation in the shared governance process” Cariadus said. So pay attention because the candidates will be campaigning in the quad May 14-18 and make sure you log onto your computer that week and vote.
