Psychological services offer free therapy sessions to students to help them deal with the stresses associated with life and school. Beverly Muse, a licensed marriage-family therapist, is available for enrolled students by appointment or drop in on specific days. Muse is available to talk about anything from depression to anxiety, family issues, coping with a death or illness, or any other reason.”This is different from academic counseling,” Muse says. “Psychological counselors are not here to help students pick classes, but to help deal with the day to day stresses that all students face. It is really hard to go to school…we can help [students] cope and to manage.”Students enrolled at Skyline receive 4 to 6 free 50 minute psycho-therapy sessions a semester, depending on the needs of the student. The sessions are paid for out of your health fees and are confidential. “What we try to do is short term…crisis intervention,” says Linda Van Sciver, a counselor/coordinator for Disabled Students Program and Services. If a student qualifies for disability, they can receive extended times on exams, or other benefits to give students the best chance at success. “It is really an accommodation for students,” Van Sciver says. Psychological services can also make referrals to an outside therapist if more sessions are needed than the allotted amount. Referrals are set up either through students insurance, or community resources are available which offer a sliding scale for those without insurance. “There is no reason that is too small to come in,” Muse says. To make an appointment with psychological services, stop into building two and make an appointment, or drop in is available Monday and Friday between 12 p.m. to 12:50 p.m.
