On the first official Associated Students of Skyline College (ASSC) council meeting ASSC senator / Black Student Union president, Tracy Bailey brought up a proposal for the Black Student Union’s Black History Month planned events. After discussing the key events planned to commemorate the awareness of African American History and Culture the ASSC were skeptic about approval. The reason why the ASSC is skeptical about approving the proposal is they don’t know if they can provide enough money for the BSU events. Bailey discussed their plans on having a film presentation, artist presentation, a skit dating back to the early civil rights movement, and an invitation for the African American Dance Troupe. Senators raised concerns about not representing the BSU community on campus, and also brought up the concerns on whether or not both, the ASSC and the BSU have enough to fund the programs. The overall idea was to have at least enough to support half the costs, from the original $3200 (not including possible funding for refreshments and food). The conclusive decision will be discussed in the next meeting, which will be held on Feb. 21. Both the senior President of the BSU (2000-2005), James Duncan and the current president of the BSU (2006-2007), Tracey Dailey are senators in the Associated Students of Skyline College; when asked about how the Student Government has been in funding their events Duncan replied that they have been helpful and the ASSC advisor, Amory Cariadus, “…has been more than helpful with funding the Black Student Union events.”
