A little bit Violent Femmes, a little bit folk rock and a whole lot of other sounds and styles come together to bring you Sexcop- a band I recently stumbled upon that have beautifully simplistic songs.
Songs that range in topics from a boy who can’t take care of his pets, to a girl who walks around thinking she is in Paris, and a man who has to run away from his lover’s husband.
Sexcop may have a simple sound but they have very good instrumentation, with songs that just have a guitar and drum playing, to songs that include piano and violin. Along with the use of one of my favorite instruments-the peddle steal guitar.
Two of the best tracks on Island of Dreams that came out this past August are “The Girl Thinks She’s in Paris,” and “Lizard Killer.” “The Girl Thinks She’s in Paris” tells the tale of a girl who lives in a fantasy world where she is always in Paris.
“Many dream of going/she dreams she’s already there.” The song makes you think about all those daydreams you have, and see that there is nothing wrong with going on a vacation in your mind every so often. Maybe if more of us thought we were some place else where we would be happy- the world would be a happier place. The violin and drum break down in the middle of the song is just so uplifting, you can see yourself just walking around on a street in Paris, or perhaps looking at art in the Louvre.
“Lizard Killer” tells the story of a young man who can’t take care of his pet and it’s a flashback to the early days of rock with its three piece rhythm of guitar, bass and drums. The chorus of the song is one of my favorite parts of the song, “well I’m dumb as hell and this may be true, but the funny thing is I am smarter then you.” Because if you think about this, it’s true because if the only insult someone can come up with is you’re dumb as hell, then what does that say about their intelligence? Also it is just a song that is both fun and funny.
Sexcop may only have one album out, but they are worth a check out, because I have a feeling you can expect great things from these people as long as they don’t go the way of many other good bands and disappear because they don’t follow what is currently popular on the radio.
