So last week I asked you what happened to Thanksgiving and it was a valid question because it really does seem to have vanished, even if it is treated like a step child to Christmas and Chanukah I hope you all had a lovely one. As winter raps its icy fist around the bay area, we here at Skyline College are getting ready for a students favorite time of year: winter break. A time when we all let our selves untwined and relax. The problem with this time of year is that we all get lazy, and this causes problems when the semester starts up again, because you go into school and it is hard to kick start one’s brain again.
So this winter don’t let yourself end up like I have so many times before spending all day in your pjs eating Ben and Jerry’s ice cream watching Lifetime movies and documentaries on the History Channel. This winter I do not plan to let my mind turn into holiday pudding, I plan to keep it active and ready for the next semester. You just have to keep yourself busy from time to time, sure a few lazy days will be wonderful but just don’t let your self fall into the habit of doing it every day. Make plans get out and see the world with the time you have off. I know what you’re saying you don’t know what else to do other then sit around at your house all day.
There are many things one can do over break to keep them selves occupied . Like reading a good book, something that will make you happy not just something you have to read because your teacher assigns you it. Reading for fun can also be very relaxing which is just what you want over break something that will keep your mind going but help you get the rest and relaxation you need.
Another way to spend holiday break is volunteering for a charity or homeless shelter, because they always need more help in the winter. It’s a great way to spend your time and you meet interesting people who are doing something good for your community. Also we all love getting that warm fuzzy feeling inside when we help someone out so go out this winter and help someone out it not only will keep you from getting lazy over the break but it will make you feel good and who ever you’re helping feel good as well.
So remember over the break don’t let yourself fall into the doldrums of pizza pockets and Jerry Springer reruns, get out there and do something so you’re not totally brain dead when the semester comes back around. I know I will try to keep my brain alive and active over the break and I hope you do the same.
Happy Holidays, enjoy your break and see you next semester.
