In the dark days of the ’70s, disco ruled the air waves with an iron fist. There was a gleaming beam of light, a band that went by the names Parliament and Funkadelic. Inspired by the production line of sound used by Motown, George Clinton collected a group of fifty musicians and started recording under the name Parliament. Parliament brought funky jams to the air waves along with a freaked out and colorful fashion sense. After some time, they released the song “Testify” which had great success on the R&B charts, but their record company refused to let them release any further songs. The group disbanded, but later reformed with the same lineup as Funkadelic, releasing funky jams.
With powerful guitar riffs and bopping bass lines, one doesn’t find it hard to get down to the grooves that come out with George Clinton’s vocals and the powerful, almost choir-like, backing vocals. Each song is like a winding journey with a beginning, a climax and an end, taking you on an emotional ride through a rainbow colored wave of sound. When listening to Funkadelic, you can just see a sea of funky-fresh hippie hip cats grooving on the dance floor or just chilling out having some cool conversation. With songs that range from fast and fresh that make you want to shake your groove thing, to the slow jams with soulful deep vocals and an almost jazzy sound that you just lay back and let wash over you, Funkadelic is just one of those bands that everyone will love to get down to.
Funkadelic has done so much to influence on much of today’s modern music, influencing the way sounds are put together, changing the way songs are mixed, and even how groups perform live. There are many wonderful songs by Funkadelic for the starting Funkadelic fan that are super to listen to. One should start with “Flash Light” and “Bop Gun,” two classic funk tunes that will draw in you into the rest of the group’s collection of songs.
