A former Skyline student was shot and killed on Tuesday, March 1 in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
Christy Chan, a nursing major, was with her boyfriend George Tang the night of the incident. The two were sitting in a parked car in the 1800 block of 18th Avenue when the car was fired upon in the pouring rain.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence, and it is likely that it was premeditated.
According to the police, they received a phone call at 7:42 the night of the murder. When they arrived at the scene, they found Chan in the passenger seat and Tang on the pavement outside the car on the driver side.
Chan was pronounced dead on the scene, while Tang was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the head.
According to a report in The San Francisco Chronicle, Tang has a criminal history and possible gang ties. However, it is not clear whether gang activity was a factor in the shooting.
Chan had no criminal history and it is likely that she was not the intended target of the shooting.
Chan was in her early 20s and The Chronicle reported that she was living with Tang at the time of her death.
Despite Tang’s possible gang connections, police said this will not be classified as a gang shooting at this time.
The case is still under investigation and the San Francisco Police Department urges that anybody who might have information that could lead to an arrest please call their anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444.
