Throw riot grrl, old school hip-hop, and a healthy dose of San Francisco’s gay club scene into a blender-what do you get? You get Bay Area band Gravy Train!!!! They mix a wonderful combination of hip-hop, punk and new wave to get a sound that is so original that you will either love it to death or hate it.
Their lyrics are filled with hilarity, which can be found in songs like “Sippin 40’s,” “You Made Me Gay,” and “Hella Nervous.” Some songs mix light sexual innuendo with other songs that just toss innuendo straight out the window and are blatantly sexual.
This group, based out of Oakland, has one full-length album, “Hello Doctor,” and their second full-length is slated for release in July of this year. If you’re looking for something fun to dance to and that will make you laugh, pick up a copy of “Hello Doctor” to get down to it; it’s really a must-have. Their EP is difficult to find, but definitely worth looking for if you dig their sound.
Gravy Train!!!!, however, is not known for their limited album work. They are known for their wild and crazy live shows which are packed full of energy and insanity. The group has a huge gay following, mostly because the two men in the band are openly gay, and have sung many a song about their sexual orientation. This comes into play in their shows, which turn into giant dance parties.
Not only does the band play their music very well live, but they have also have a massive stage presence and interact with the crowd on a nearly personal level.
So, hop on the train and come along for one helluva ride, because Gravy Train!!!! is one band that I can honestly say is unique, entertaining and interesting, as long as you can handle the gay-club-kid vibe these guys put out.
