What happens when you take punk rock guitar, bagpipes, a fiddle, and a whole slew of other instruments? You get Irish rock group Flogging Molly, a lovely band from Dublin. With roots deep in traditional Irish folk music and rock ‘n’ roll, this band has a sound to offer that is just as good for chilling out as it is for rocking out. Their hybrid of punk rock and classic Irish reel, combined with great lyrics, creates a sound that has something everyone is sure to be able to get down to.
The odd mix of instruments makes these folks fun to listen to because not every song has the same three instruments in it. They are not just a punk band from Ireland; they are an Irish punk band. It adds a depth to the songs that not many bands do not have, making them a favorite around The Skyline View offices.
With slow-jam songs like “Selfish Man” and “These Exiled Years,” a listener can enjoy the beautiful rhythms and hypnotizing lyrics that pull them into the story of the song. Or one can rock out to the songs “Devil’s Dance Floor” and “Black Friday Rule,” two especially rocking songs by the group. What is most lovable about the tracks is that they make you want to get up and move-they fill you with whatever emotion the song is trying to express. Whether it is anger, sorrow or joy, one can feel the emotions pulsing through the music, and the soul.
Flogging Molly is one of my top 10 bands to listen to any time, any place, anywhere. If you haven’t checked these guys out, you really should. They are not only entertaining, but good musicians whose songs carry powerful messages and beautiful melodies. Check out these fine young lads and lass from the Emerald Isle. They are really worth it.
