The Skyline Men’s soccer team ended the regular season with a record of 9-4-7. Coach Danny Link says the record should have been different.
“We could easily be 16-4. With this team we have the potential to beat anybody in the state. We have showed that,” Coach Link said.
On Nov. 5 the men played Los Positas at Skyline and grabbed a victory after a tiring game full of excitement. The ending score was 2-1, with goals from captain Daniel Rodriguez and Mario Godinez. Coach Link is happy about the win, but still says his team could have done better.
“It was a 2-1 game, we should have beat the team 4-0.” Link said.
Skyline scored early in the game and held the other team to scoring till later in the half. The Trojans missed a few opportunities to score with balls that went high or wide. The men got their chance when the goalie from Los Positas ran too far from the net leaving a gap for Skyline to score again. The Trojans made it in time, as the whistles blew seconds after signifying the end of the first half.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second half, but the half was still full of excitement. Toward the middle of the half, a player from Los Positas and a Skyline player had a run in leaving them both on the ground. The Los Positas player punched the Skyline player and it lead to a fight between the teams. Coach Link feels this was the worst display of attitude the men showed all season.
” This was probably the worst showing of the season,” Link said. ” We should have never gotten into that scuffle. But he was just defending himself.”
Despite what he felt about this game, Coach Link says the team had a winning season.
” It was a positive season. The last couple of years we’ve taken the steps in the right direction. We were twice ranked #19 in the nation this season.”
Coach Link says that his team’s strength is their unity, which so many other teams don’t have. Instead of having one great player to be considered the whole team, they are unified and are all great players.
” We have a great group of guys who work hard everyday,” Link said. ” We’re a team. That’s what I keep telling the guys, that we are not just one player; we are a team.”
The one thing Link said the men needed to learn more was just playing the game. Link says that the team is fairly mixed between new and old players, but they just needed to work hard and learn playing together.
The Trojans have a 90% chance of going to play-offs. Coach Link will find out soon whether his team made it or not. Either way Coach Link couldn’t be happier.
” I love this group of guys,” Link said. ” I’m so proud of them.”
