The first thing that you need to keep in mind while you think about what I am about to complain about is this: We are students at an institution of higher education, otherwise known as a college, however in the long run this doesn’t mean much.
I say this because the topic of, as well as the target of, my complaints this week are about no place other than Skyline College itself. Not the teachers, or the administration, or the student body, but rather I am complaining about one sign. That’s right folks; do not adjust your newspaper. I am well aware of what I am doing, so let’s just get through it; you can try and understand it later.
Before I begin I would like to make one thing clear, anything that does not make sense, or seems stupid to me makes me angry, as such I feel a need to voice such opinions so that others not so easily frustrated as I may understand exactly what it is that makes me complain.
We’ll begin with a bit of the obvious: Now, if you’ve ever been up to parking lot 2, then you must be well aware of two facts: The stairs are a royal pain to climb (not that I’m complaining), and at the top of said stairs is erected a monument to the nonsensical function of the funds allotted to buildings and grounds departments, supposedly for the betterment of our school.
To be more specific, at the top of the stairs is a sign, standing 5 feet tall and 2 feet across. It is impossible but to notice it staring you down as you walk past it in the direction that can only be described as the most direct route towards campus.
The message passed on by this sign is a simple one, in bold white letters with a neat little arrow accompanying it, it reads, “To all campus buildings.” Now a sign of this nature is not necessarily something to get all riled up about, however in this particular case I find it to be a nonsensical waste of school funds, as well as an eyesore on an otherwise beautiful campus.
To begin my explanation, I will say that the sign serves no practical purpose other than to take up space, and perhaps provide those without any sense of direction a way of finding a campus that, were they not completely incompetent, they would need no help finding in the first place.
Common logic in its purest form will tell us that in order to have even found yourself in lot 2 you would first have either had to drive there, or have walked up the stairs which lead directly from Skyline College. By that logic there happens to be two separate roads by which you could enter this lot. Both of them require you to take a short drive past the school, in which I can only assume you are attempting to get to.
Now let us recap on what we’ve learned so far:
· The sign in lot 2 is far too large for its purpose, which is to provide information that would be just as easily obtained through a process I have begun to call “looking in front of you.”
· The process of making signs, as well as cementing them to the ground for that matter, is not free. It seems like a waste of money to me to have implemented a sign in such a place that all it really achieves is insulting the students by implying that they would need a sign to tell them something that they should already know.
Perhaps if the sign had other relevant information on it, taking up space it does have that is not being used, it would not be such an eyesore on campus. But for the time being it remains a useless piece of plastic stuck on metal, serving no purpose on campus.
On a side note, it has come to my attention that certain people in the Skyline College community do not appreciate the way I write my articles. This does not bother me by any means, and I would be happy to talk to anyone who disagrees with me and explain to them where I am coming from.
However I would ask that anyone who has a problem with my writing please speak to me directly, instead of talking about me to their peers, or perhaps their class, without actually raising a voice against what they so obviously disagree with. In short and to be blunt, if you have a problem, let me know I’d be happy to duke it out with you.
Please send all complaints to [email protected], or come to the Skyline View office during our regular office hours: M, W, F between 12-1p.m. Thank you all very much and remember, I am the Accordion Cowboy, and this has been I’m Mentioning….
