The security department recently made some upgrades in their equipment that should help students feel safer on campus.
Currently, the department is using a walkie-talkie communication system which enables security officers to talk to each other on campus but not off campus. These walkie-talkies are the same type used by police departments. The down side is the units cost a thousand dollars each, and about half that to repair said the head of campus security recently.
The Nokia walkie-talkies were upgraded to Nokia’s cell phone walkie-talkies which enable both on and off campus communication. These cell phone walkie-talkies, though cheaper than the current equipment to purchase and repair, is now tied to a monthly billing contract with Nokia.
Also, the company has a booster tower on campus to provide its customer with better service. Chief of Security James Herndon said he believes these new walkie-talkie cell phones will be a great help in communication between the security officers and increase safety at Skyline College.
