Do you like punk? Do you like show tunes? Do you like punk show tunes? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may already be or should be a fan of Me First and The Gimme Gimmes.
This band catches people’s attention because they do nothing but cover songs, turning them into punk/ska melodies of deliciousness. They cover everything from the classics of yesteryear to the R&B hits of today.
Me First and The Gimme Gimmes have a great sound that is sure to make you want to get up and dance. With blazing guitar riffs, hot bass lines, popping drum beats, it’s all hard to ignore. Who wouldn’t love a slamming rock version of “It’s Raining on Prom Night,” or “Me and Julio Down By the School Yard,” or better yet “Country Roads.” These boys bring it and bring it hard.
What I like most is the care they take in creating a good cover song, which, believe it or not, is a very hard thing to do. That is, to take a classic and loved song and turn it into your own while still letting it keep its timeless quality. Me First and The Gimme Gimmes do this very well. I have yet to here a cover by them that lost the songs classic appeal or edge.
Another fabulous thing about Me First and The Gimme Gimmes is that they know how to take themselves lightly while balancing out countless stints on the Vans Warped Tour and numerous gigs at Stinky’s Peep Show (also known as The Wagon Wheel, a local bar and venue in San Francisco). They play weddings, bar mitzvahs, bowling league award parties, and many other similar events for cover bands. These boys are currently looking for a Super Bowl Half Time Party to play at.
But on a serious note, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes is composed of Fat Mike on bass, Spike on vocals, Joey and Jackson on guitar and back up vocals, and Dave on drums. This band is sure to knock your socks off. The main reason you should check these boys out aside from the face they have 15 albums out (and a new once coming out on the Oct. 18), is the fact they are local boys a San Francisco. So, check them out. No matter what genre of music you are into, you will find something about Me First and The Gimme Gimmes to like.
