No fond farewell. No goodbye lunch or gold watch. The “SMART” registration by phone was quietly retired on Sept. 3, according to a Skyline College administrator. “It was successful but not a significant program,” Dean Sherri Hancock of Enrollment Services said, recently. “About 90 percent of the students do things on the Web now, and only 5 or 6 percent conducted business through SMART.” Although the last day to add semester-length classes has passed, people can still register online for short courses using WebSMART. Hancock said the admissions and registration office located in building 2 will work with people who don’t have computer access. They can either fax, mail or register in person. “WebSMART is a wonderful tool,” Hancock said, “You can find your grades…print an invoice or a schedule…apply for a fee waiver…just about anything you need.”But the program had one glitch on Aug. 31, the last night of late registration: it shut down at 8 p.m. instead of its usual pumpkin hour of midnight. A combination of human and machine error left many wondering whether they were in or out of a class the next day. However, the registration deadline was extended to anyone who had an instructor’s authorization code. Next semester, when the San Mateo County Community College District completes its conversion from an Oracle to a UNIX operating system in January 2005, WebSMART will be open 24/7. “It’s not a comment about Oracle,” Hancock said, referring to the switch. “It’s a matter of age and the vast improvement of technology over a short period of time.”
