At the Coast Conference women’s badminton tournament at Skyline ,held on May 8, four Trojan ladies won round one singles matches.Jennifer Wong defeated City College’s Selina Chan, 11-3 and 11-4 in a play-in game. Stephanie Cheung beat Thao Doan of City College 11-0 and 11-1. Lisa Payte beat Sheng Lee of Fresno City 11-3, 11-3, and Celine Sin defeated Kiely Jones of Fresno 11-9 and 11-4. Jennifer Wong was defeated by Thu Do of Mission College 11-2, 11-1 and Sandy Myint of City College defeated Evelyn Ma 11-4, 11-3.In singles quarterfinal play, each Trojan victor qualified themselves for the State Championships. Stephanie Cheung beat Ashley Reid of City College 11-0, 11-1. Sin defeated Julie Jensen of Fresno 11-3, 11-1. The only loss of the quarterfinal was by Payte she fell to Myint 11-4, 11-1.Singles semi-final play saw Stephanine Cheung defeat Thu Do of Mission College 11-0, 11-1. Myint defeated Sin of Skyline 11-2, 11-1.In the singles finals, Cheung defeated Myint 11-3, 11-0 and in the third place match, Sin defeated Do by default. The rankings for the state championships in singles play: Stephanine Cheung placed first, and teammate Sin placed third. Payte also qualified. Doubles quarterfinal action saw Stephanie Cheung and Gloria Cheung defeat Lee and Nakahra of Fresno 11-0, 11-2. Payte and Sin beat Doan and Chan of City College 11-5, 11-5. The only loss of the quarterfinal: Myint and Leung of City College beat Wong and Tan 11-1, 11-3.In doubles semi-finals, Cheung and Cheung beat Jones and Reid of City College via injury default. Myint and Leung defeated Skyline’s Payte and Sin 11-2, 11-2. In the doubles finals, Stephanie and Gloria Cheng defeated the team of Myint and Leung 11-2, 11-5.In the doubles rankings, Stephanie Cheng and Gloria Cheng ranked first and teammates Lisa Payte and Celine Sin also qualified.
