As finals begin to loom over the campus, a new project is about to begin here at Skyline that has been in the planning stages for a year now, and will bring much more inconvenience to those who park on campus than ever before. The former Pacific Heights Middle School, which is adjacent to the campus, will be used for makeshift classrooms, while buildings 3 and 8 are undergoing seismic retrofitting and modernization. The work on building 3 is projected to be completed by August 2005. Building 8 is set to be finished in December of that year.”The meeting that we had with Dr. White this morning, and we talked about things that still need to happen to make sure we’re keeping up with not only the students, faculty and staff informed, but the community at large,” Supervisor of Facilities Richard Inokuchi said. “They’re talking about putting a kiosk a little bit south of the flag pole that’ll talk about some of the construction. That’s something that should be happening in few weeks.”Building 3 houses most campus athletic facilities, which means that the construction is going to leave the school without a gym for the next 2 years, bringing a difficult task to the athletics department to find a place suitable for the sports teams to be able to practice. The work on building 3 will consist of seismic upgrade work with renovation work that will include new team rooms, locker rooms, and shower and restroom facilities on the first floor and addition of restrooms on the gym floor. The dance studio and mat rooms will also be remodeled Set to begin in September and to be completed in April 2006 is the new Student Union Building, as well as the new science annex connected to building 7. Both buildings will be located near each other. One is an extension of building 7 and will occupy the space that is currently staff parking lot 7. The other is going to be the new building 6 and will occupy the part of the quad used for dropping off and picking up students. As these two projects are put into effect, the parking lots will be first to suffer. By Aug. 1, the loop road between lots 5 and 6 will be closed, as well as the western half of lot 5 and staff lots 7 and 8.As for the move to the Pacific Heights building, building 3 will be holding their classes there starting approximately June 1, and going through the summer semester. Building 8, however, is set to move in late August, and to stay there through the fall semester. The soccer field is currently undergoing construction and is set to be closed through Aug. 1. It is planned to temporarily reopen between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31. It will then be closed again for resurfacing between Jan. 1 and Jan. 21, 2005.In regards to the construction of the new buildings, Skyline College has received three separate proposals from three separate designers, each of which will be reviewed by not only the staff and faculty, but also by the student body itself. By May 17, all three of the proposals will be available to view in cafeteria located on the third floor of building 2. The faculty is asking for any student who wants their opinion counted to look over the three designed plans and to submit their opinion as to which design would be the best for the school. “Essentially we’ll be looking for which design students like, and how does the proposed design fit into the existing buildings on campus,” Sandy Irber of the president’s office said. The survey can also be found online at the Skyline College homepage.”Basically, we’re encouraging students to come and take a look and give us their reactions to the aesthetics of the proposed designs,” Inokuchi said about the project. The entire project began last year and should be completed by 2007. Despite all of the inconveniences that will be caused by the construction, the results will be something that students and faculty alike will benefit from, as well as the campus itself.
