The Skyline women’s badminton team hosted the Coast Conference Championships on May 8.They ended the season with an unblemished record of 6-0 in conference play. In their last regular season match, Skyline beat Mission College of Santa Clara 18-3. Along the perfect conference season, the Trojans defeated City College of San Francisco, Fresno City College, and Mission College via sweeps.”Skyline’s success this year is due to great team depth,” women’s badminton head coach Jan Fosberg wrote in an e-mail interview. “We are a very solid team from number 1 to number 7.” Skyline’s number 1 singles player Stephanie Cheung finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record and will be the number 1 seeded in the Coast Conference Playoffs. “Stephanie is by far the best player in the conference and I anticipate that she will finish in the top 4 in the state,” Fosberg said. “Her skills compare to the top players in the state.” Skyline will be the Northern California representative in the Community College State Badminton Playoffs.”It is an honor to play for the State Championship for the third time in four years,” Fosberg said. “We have been blessed with a lot of very talented players.” With this much success Fosberg has brought to the women’s badminton program, she feels that her team isn’t quite yet a legacy because of another solid conference team.”I’m not sure I would say that we are a dynasty but, thanks to solid high school programs in the area, we have the ability to stay strong and be competitive every year,” Fosberg said. “With De Anza dropping their team due to budget constraints, it has made it easier to be successful. De Anza won the conference last season and also the year prior to Skyline fielding a team, they would always be a tough opponent if they were still in our conference.”
