The last time a Skyline basketball team missed playoffs was the 1975-76 season. This season the basketball team finished the year 6-18 (3-7). This was the second season in school history that the team has won less than 10 games. The other season was Skyline’s inaugural season in 1969-70 in which they finished 7-20. Even though it was a tough season for Coach Raffetto, he is very optimistic for next season.”I think you will be surprised how quickly we can recover,” Raffetto wrote in an e-mail interview. “Not only is it a goal, but an expectation that we will be back in the playoffs and will post a winning record. Our goals will be the same as they always are-20 wins during the season, a conference championship, and a trip to the final eight. I think it is key that we believe we recognize what was wrong in 2003-2004.”With a new roster on the team, most of the players were freshmen with a few sophomores. At times that made it somewhat harder for the team to coexist during the season because of the lack of experience.”It was difficult to do some of the things we have done in the past because of our inexperience,” Raffetto said. “We did not have one player returning from the team the year before. Many of our players were freshman from out of state. We never really jelled like I hoped we would. This coupled with key injuries and a few other extenuating circumstances made it difficult to get over the top. We were constantly falling just short and after a while it seemed as though that became the norm.”Next season, the Trojans hope to change their fortune as they try to come back to elite prominence and go to the playoffs. Some of the things they would like to do is try to spend time on campus with the players.None of the coaches received primary employment from Skyline because they carried other full time jobs, which was problematic due to the fact that the team had new players and were from out of state. The coaching staff misjudged the amount of time it would take to get to know the team on the level needed to and the amount of time it would take the players to get accustomed to life in California. Raffetto believes that by next season they will better their planning.”We will do a better job of ‘balancing our roster’ with returners and newcomers,” Raffetto said. “In addition we will take team chemistry much more into account when assembling our team.”
