The Skyline Trojans baseball season has hit off to a slow start as they lost 7-5 against Laney College (1-0) on Dec. 31. Skyline Starting Pitcher Al Orzco (0-1) pitched five innings striking out nine batters, walking three, and hitting three batters. Four of the six batters that were walked in the game scored against the Trojans (0-1) putting them in an early deficit 5-2 after four innings. Trojan sophomore Center Fielder Will Vogl and freshman Designated Hitter Ken Wardell both had three hits for Skyline, as the team had ten hits total. Wardell had three RBIs in the game, which led the team. Trojans First Baseman Dan Hernandez had two RBIs, a double and walked twice.Coming into the season, Skyline has brought a strong young team with 32 local players. The Trojans are the only community college baseball team in the area to have an all-local team, according to baseball Head Coach Dino Nomicos. In an e-mail interview prior to the start of the baseball season, Nomicos had strong aspirations for his team.”Our strength will be hitting as it always is,” Nomicos wrote. “But we will surprise a lot of people with our pitching. We should do real well this year. We have great team speed, and our defense is solid.”Skyline’s next game will be at home against Diablo Valley College Feb. 12 at 2 p.m.
