The Skyline women’s soccer team had never advanced to the second round of the Northern California Community College Soccer playoffs in the school’s long history. All that changed this year.
The Trojans first made history this season by becoming the only women’s soccer team in school history to finish the regular season with a winning record. The team then added to this year’s achievements by knocking off highly ranked De Anza College in the first round of the post-season in a memorable and hard-fought game.
On Nov 22, the Trojans looked to advance even further in the playoffs when they played Sierra College. Unfortunately, the team’s record-setting run came to an end as they lost to Sierra in overtime, 0-3.
“We played hard the whole game, but in overtime, we just lost our energy and couldn’t score,” forward Deanna Prince said. Sierra managed to score three different times in the two extra overtime periods as they dribbled right through the very tired Skyline defense.
“Everyone played extremely hard today, so I am not upset at all,” said Head Coach Kevin Corsiglia. “We played a very strong team that knew how to finish off a game.”
The team ended the historic season with a final record of 12-7-3 and a ranking of twelvth in the state. The Trojans may have been ranked number 12, but they can claim they are one of the top eight teams in the state considering they knocked off the fifth-ranked team, De Anza College.
“This team has overachieved all year long and exceeded expectations,” Coach Corsiglia said of the Trojans.
Because of Skyline’s successful season, expect to see some of this year’s players receive all-state honors. Two of those players are Susanna Chase and Betsy Cordoba. Chase led the team with 15 goals and had three assists on the season. Cordoba had nine goals and led the team with 11 assists. Goalkeeper Rocio Samayoa also had an impressive season, blocking 89 goal attempts.
