The Skyline women’s soccer team has been overachieving all season.
On Nov. 18, the team’s success continued in post-season play as they came away with a hard fought win on the road over the number five ranked De Anza College.
De Anza was the huge favorite to win this contest as Skyline came into the game with a number 12 ranking after tying Cabrillo College 1-1 in their final game of the regular season. De Anza posted two shutout victories over Skyline earlier in the year.
The game was a defensive battle from the start. Both teams went into halftime with the score tied 0-0.
“I was happy with the way we played in the first half, especially on the defensive side,” said Head Coach Kevin Corsiglia. “I knew that things would start opening up for us offensively in the second half.”
De Anza managed to get on the scoreboard first, scoring with just under twelve minutes left in the second half. The Trojans answered back a few minutes later as Betsy Cordoba dribbled the ball the length of the field from her defensive position, getting fouled on her way to a goal attempt. Cordoba then made a decision that may have prolonged the Trojans’ season.
She elected that her best friend and fellow teammate, Sussanna Chase, take her penalty shot. This decision proved to be a wise one as Chase was successful on the penalty kick, tying the score 1-1.
“She (Sussanna Chase) is my best friend and I trust her shot more than mine. At the time I just felt that she had a better chance of making it than I did,” Cordoba said.
Time soon expired in regulation with the score tied. The game went into overtime with each team attempting seven penalty shots to decide the game.
In the first round of overtime, De Anza was successful on their first penalty shot. Skyline failed to make their first shot as Deanna Prince missed the attempt.
“Deanna was very emotional after she missed, but we pulled together and let her know that we can still win this,” Betsy Cordoba said.
In the second round, De Anza would again make the penalty shot, but this time the Trojans responded when they were up. Cordoba kept the Trojans alive by nailing the second shot.
The two teams were successful in the next round but De Anza missed their attempt in the fourth round. Skyline made their attempt, tying the contest 1-1.
The overtime came down to the last set of players for both teams in the seventh and final round. De Anza came up unsuccessful on their attempt after a crucial block by Goalkeeper Rocio Samayoa. Skyline had one last attempt to win it and did so after sophomore Amanda Lockett iced the game with her penalty shot.
The final outcome would be 7-6 Skyline by virtue of penalty kicks. Skyline was very emotional and juiced up after the win as players celebrated wildly on the field.
“We have never beat this team before, and to beat them in the playoffs on their field is just unbelievable,” Coach Corsiglia said. “We had players who really stepped up and weren’t afraid to face this team.”
The Trojans will advance to the second round of the Northern California section playoffs and face Sierra College on Nov. 22.
