They breeze into the class breathless while the teacher explains the homework. As they rifle through their bag for a pen, the teacher has gone onto part two. Still searching and finally giving up, they ask a neighbor for a pen and a copy of the homework because by now, the teacher has erased the board and started the lesson. It’s a succession of small behaviors that adds to stress.
Whether it’s your style or not, school tends to force one to get organized or get slammed. Everything seems to pile up at once. Research papers, exams, relationships, finances, jobs and illnesses; all seem to intensify within a few short weeks of a semester.
According to Professor Felix Perez of The Learning Center, the first step to getting organized is to use a planner. Perez instructs a class at Skyline College called Learning Skills 801, a successful how-to course that helps students develop confidence.
Perez teaches the Learning Cycle, a system of managing academics using short cuts or time spent in learning. The first step is to spend five to 15 minutes previewing your notes, assignments, and reading material. The second step is to attend class.
“This step is crucial,” said Perez. “As attendance contributes 90 percent to the probability of achieving an A or B in a class.”
The third step is take five to 15 minutes to review your notes and set a purpose for study. By answering the five W’s and How, it usually becomes clear which areas you need to study, by seeking further information or seeking clarification from your teacher.
The fourth and final step is to study. Establish a routine and find a regular place in which to study. The general rule is to spend two hours for each unit in intensive study, but don’t do it all at once. Take short, but frequent breaks that won’t interrupt your train of thought or momentum.
Learning skills 801 is offered throughout the year as an open entry course. You may also drop in at the Learning Center or make an appointment to see Perez. He can also be reached through his website. Go to http://www.skylinecollege.org and select the link for “staff.”Free Skyline College Student Planners may be picked up at the library, the Learning Center, or the Student Government office located in the cafeteria. Alternatively, you can purchase an inexpensive, used Palm Pilots off of the Internet for about $35.00. The information can be downloaded from your computer.
