Tanya Johnson was elected president of this year’s Associated Students of Skyline College on the election held from April 28 through May 2. Johnson won in a landslide victory against incumbent Marilyn Mascarinas.
This year’s election yielded a total of 426 votes as compared to last years turn out of 561; the lower voter turn out was attributed in part to the bad weather.
“The weather did not help out too much,” said ASSC Vice President Luzmaria Maldonado.
However, some students had other reasons for not showing up to vote.
“I was busy and hadn’t had enough time,” said Christopher Ludwin, a Skyline student who said to be studying for his finals.
Lack of information about voting procedures and the candidates also caused some confusion among students.
Although aware of the elections, Esther Hou said to be uninformed of the voting process, “I did not know where or how to vote.” Hou said.
Although Judy Wyang did vote, she expressed that she did not know who the candidates were or what they stood for.
“The candidates need to talk more about themselves, who they are, and what their philosophies are,” Wyang said.
Newly elected President, Tanya Johnson and Vice President, Peter Monrroy, said they are planning to get themselves and the students more involved around campus.
“I will try and find solutions to our problems with parking and smoking-help plan out more diverse activities and bring cultural awareness to campus,” Johnson said.
Vice President Peter Monrroy also plans on making changes similar to Johnson’s, stressing the importance of letting his voice be heard as well as the students.
