Before spring break the Skyline Trojans baseball team 15-16 (7-11) were defeated by Cabrillo 3-1 April 4.
In the bottom of the ninth inning the Trojans were trying to start a rally trailing 3-0, when third baseman Dante Muto got on base on an error by Cabrillo third baseman Kyle Coolidge. Muto was pitch ran by freshman outfielder Laurence Van Dusen. The following batter was second baseman Kyle McClain who grounded out to Coolidge.
On that play Van Dusen was running to second and tried to stretch the run to third base but was out on a throw by Cabrillo’s first baseman Justin Rhodes. The bold run by Van Dusen hurt the team as the following batter was right fielder Brandon Ramsey who hit a solo homerun over the left field fence to make the score 3-1.
“He was being over aggressive and the run really didn’t matter,” said Will Vogl. “He was taking a chance he really didn’t have to take.”
If Van Dusen stayed on base, Bischoff might have pitched differently.
The score may have said 3-1 but the Trojans were dominated by the pitching of Thomas Bischoff. Bischoff pitched a complete game giving up three hits and striking out five batters. At one point during the game he retired 13 batters from the end of the fourth inning to the start of the ninth.
“I just felt that if I got ahead of the hitters and make my pitch my teammates would get the outs behind me.” He said.
Skyline couldn’t get their bats going, as five batters were combined 0 for 13 against Bischoff.
“I didn’t make the adjustment and kept my eye on the ball and shouldn’t have swung at some pitches I swung at.” Vogl said who went 0 for 4.
During the game while the Trojans couldn’t get anything going, they didn’t feel like they were in the game.
“Emotionally I don’t think we were in the game at all,” Watters said after the game. ” Once (Bischoff) shut us down the first few innings, we ‘put the car in park’. We just don’t bounce back that well as team.”
