The Skyline Trojans baseball team defeated Gavilan 8-6 in extra innings behind a walk off two-run homerun by Trojan center fielder Will Vogl March 22.
Vogl hit two homers totaling his runs batted in for the game with six. But the game would not been in extra innings if it was not for the play of Trojan first baseman Chris Watters. With Skyline trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, two men out Vogl hit a single to score Justin Doherty who earlier in the inning walked to make the score 6-5. Following the base hit by Vogl, shortstop Jermy Acey walked to put runners on first and second. Watters on a 3-1 count hit a screaming line drive in between second base and first base scoring in Vogl to tie the game.
“You have to bring them in,” Watters said. “You have to get runs however you can get them. Today we drove them in.”
This was a victory Skyline needed to get back in the thick of the race in the Coast Conference Division.
“We had to get this win,” Vogl said. “We couldn’t lose any more and we came out battling.”
The resilient Trojans 11-13 (3-8) battled all game with great relief pitching by Adam Hartman who relived starting pitcher Jon Kimball. During the stretch of the game Hartman got out 12 Gavilan 8-17 (3-8) batters in a row and kept Skyline in the game.
“Hartman did a great job I don’t think they scored a run off him.” Watters said.
The season is not over for the Trojans who are not laying down for anybody.
“Don’t count us out yet we are still battling.” Skyline baseball coach Dio Nomicos said.
