The Skyline (8-6, 0-1) baseball team opened Coast Conference play with a defeat by Canada (2-11, 1-0) 5-3 Feb. 28, which was rescheduled from a damp field Feb 27.
Starting Trojan pitcher Bryan Zahn got off to a slow start against Canada as he walked the lead off hitter Rich Resser, after striking out Clay Alacron, Zaun walked Stoval, then struck out Hendrickson for the second out of the inning. But then Miller singled in Resser to give Canada an early 1-0 lead after a half inning. In the game Zahn walked five batters in all.
Trojans lead off hitter Will Vogl hit a game tying homerun off of Canada starting pitcher Nick DeCampli to make the score 1-1. Then shortstop Jermy Acey scored on a fielder’s choice by Larson. Trojan took a 2-1 lead into the second inning.
“It was trying to build the intensity everybody’s got to do their own job,” Vogl said. “Look for a ball to hit and drive it, look for adjustments to the pitcher.”
After a scoreless second inning, Zahn got into some trouble in the third inning giving up three runs on three hits; two of those runs were earned.
“I wasn’t getting my mechanics down right,” Zahn said. “I was a little off early, trying to do something we work in practice and trying to get it back. Worked hard and made the adjustment I needed to.”
Worked hard and adjustments he made as Zahn in the next four innings struck out three Canada batters. Totaling his strikeouts with six, while pitching seven innings. Relief pitcher Danny Nolan threw scoreless baseball striking out two of the six batters he faced.
But DeCampli was even better as he struck out 10 Trojan batters in pitching a complete game. After the first inning, DeCampli dominated only giving up three hits the rest of the way.
“He dominates,” said Canada catcher Ortiz. “He gets in that zone, he is lefty, he gets some movement. He is a real good kid, real good arm, I’d go over there and fight for him.”
For the next few games the Trojans will try to put up more runs to win some games.
“I think we got to have a little more intensity and come out swinging.” Vogl said.
