Magicka is a popular new indie game that has popped up on Steam for the PC for $10 and mixes adventure with a great sense of humor.
The big draw of Magicka is the ability to weave your own spells from eight different types of magic. Water, heal, shield, cold, lightning, arcane, earth and fire are the different elements you can combine to create all sorts of amazing effects.
Once you get used to the controls, it becomes quite fun to combine the spells in interesting ways, and with co-op you can combine them in even more interesting ways! For example, I was playing with a friend I regularly play games with, and we discovered that mixing arcane, lightning and fire made a beam spell that did an incredible amount of damage.
I got curious and started mixing other spells, so I mixed water with arcane, which gave me a spell that was essentially equivalent to a fire hose. When our spells collided, it resulted in a massive explosion of electricity, frying almost anything we came across.
The game has a great sense of humor; there are all sorts of jokes and random silly things happening. For example, the whole game takes place in a medieval world based on Norse mythology, and a bunch of villagers rewarded me with an M60 for saving their village. The game also sets up jokes that are overly obvious just so that they can skip the punch line and throw you off.
Even the achievements have a great sense of humor, making all sorts of references to famous internet memes. “It’s over nine thousand!!!!” “IMMA FIRIN’ MAH LAZER!!!!” and “Blue… No Yelloooow!” are just a few.
There were quite a few bugs when I started playing, but there was a patch after I started writing this, so I went back to try it again post patch. The patch fixed most of the issues I had complaints about so a lot of my negative points about the game disappeared literally overnight. I still have an occasional crash, but this may be due to my having an old graphics card that appears to be burning out and direly needs replacement.
There are all sorts of hidden items to find in the game, so if you are into that kind of thing, then this may be the game for you. Once you learn spells like teleport, you should keep your eyes open for ledges where things may be hidden away.
Overall, it’s a fun game with a lot of neat little quirks to it, and the spell-casting system is really unique, which is what totally makes this game so much fun. If you’re looking for hours of fun for $10, you should definitely check out the demo, which you can grab on Steam. While you’re on Steam, you should totally join The Skyline View group!
