What makes you scream? What calms you down?
The current Skyline College Art Gallery exhibit, “The Scream,” features an array of contemporary art pieces crafted by different students from our local Jefferson High School Union District schools. These pieces consist of several ceramic objects, paintings, photographs, mixed media installations, sculptures, etc.
This exhibit showcase is up until March 11 and is the perfect opportunity to display the art of these talented teenagers.
Director of the gallery, Paul Bridenbaugh, stated that he put this project together with the Art Coordinator of the JUHSD last spring- to display a showcase of art from high school students. Many JUHSD high school teachers took the lead in their art classes and brought the work of their students into the gallery.
Mr. Bridenbaugh states that most of the art displayed does not relate back to the title “The Scream,” the students were mainly given the opportunity to create whatever kind of art they chose. The show was not intended to relate to the title but rather to expose the local high school art community and to put the work of these students out there.
The entire exhibit really demonstrates the power within contemporary practices. The pieces are very modern and contemporary, leaving “traditional” showcases to be an unusual thing now.
It is especially important in this new era of art that you try to find your language through whatever art mediums you decide to use. “The Scream” exhibit is extremely inspiring to any of the JUHSD participants and students. I’m sure all students were very impressed by the work of their classmates, and definitely appreciated all the art that was displayed in the gallery.
This is encouraging for not only all high school students, but other art students on the Skyline College campus who may want to showcase their work. All showings at the Skyline College art gallery are very important and appreciated; they are a great learning tool for all artists at Skyline, and an opportunity for them as well.
