Concert gives back to students
Wonderful music, good vibes and an overall positive message were displayed at Skyline’s very first Outreach Exclusive concert event.
The event was held on March 12, in collaboration with former Skyline faculty members Joi Blake and John Mosby, and was brought to fruition by Skyline College Outreach Coordinator, Florentino Ubungen
The event did more than just entertain students. Admission costs raised money for the Darryl Burns Memorial Scholarship, named after the father of Sunny Burns, one of members of headlining band CRSB.
The scholarship was not the only aspect of the event that gave back to the students. At one point, Florentino and a few others threw event t-shirts to the crowd members. Another act of kindness and source of entertainment occurred while the performers were in transition. The DJ for the event, DJ Cisco, held a mini dance contest with random attendees to give away tickets to various concerts and other performances around the Bay Area.
The Outreach Exclusive concert also featured big names to the college in the form of the popular two-man band CRSB. Their sound, described as “island, soul-infused pop,” and electric personalities rocked the event during their set.
The event also highlighted some of Skyline’s hidden talents, such as Melvin Gutierrez, who sang love songs while playing the ukulele, and Los Dos’s MC Aztec, as well as John Ulloa who put down raps accented with fresh drum beats. In addition, a former Skyline alumna who goes by the stage name of HOLLADOUGHBLEH, rapped about her mother, and at one point combined her set with Skyline counselor Nate Nevado. Regardless of who was on stage, the audience was constantly going wild, with each performer lending their own brand of music to the event.
One student, Vanessa Aragon, attended enjoyed the whole event, but when asked what she enjoyed most she said that she liked the idea of scholarships for students.
For the first of its kind at Skyline College, The Outreach Exclusive concert was an overall enjoyable experience. Not only was amazing talent featured, but all the proceeds for the event will eventually make their way into student’s pockets.
Florentino has hopes for future events, saying
“The cool thing about creating something for the first time is, the sky’s the limit,” He said.
With such a great turnout and a great lineup, don’t be surprised if you see another Outreach Exclusive at Skyline College.
