Last Friday, I found myself in a place I’ve been to handfuls of times before, Off the Grid: Fort Mason. Having gone there so many times before, I knew how to plot my plan of attack on the route of trucks.
First things first, I got sisig tacos from Hapa SF. The sisig tacos consist of pork marinated in lemon and vinegar, amongst other spices. The sisig is complimented perfectly with fresh cilantro, pickled cabbage, and sliced radish. Don’t forget the wedge of lime left to top your food with a little extra zest. How delicious are these sisig tacos? They’re tasty enough to buy three for $8.
Next stop on my food truck experience, I noticed an opportunity to appreciate the Crème Brûlée cart while it was unattended by customers. Honestly, any time you do not see a wait here, run as fast as you can to get there. It’s just four to five dollars for a delicious dessert in the midst of a savory night. If you like Nutella, the “Si, por favor” is the treat for you. Nutella-based crème brûlée topped with strawberries will have you saying, “yes, please” for another bite.
After my dessert break, I was back to fighting through lines and longer waits for more food. I stopped at Señor Sisig to get a hold of sisig fries for eight dollars. The fries are like nachos, but fries, and with sisig rather than your normal taqueria creation. Jalapeños add for the perfect spice to compliment the pork. Unlike Hapa SF, Señor Sisig’s sisig is a little sweeter, which makes the fries so amazing.
I had to stop by Eat on Monday before I left. The truck is only there every other Friday, so I made sure to pay my dues and grab a UFC chicken sandwich and a mini chipotle cheese burger. The UFC is a perfect. Chicken sandwiches usually are too dry, but the chicken from Eat on Monday is far from that. The mini chipotle cheese burger was full of flavor. The hamburger itself was tender and flavorful, but if you add the chipotle sauce your taste buds go crazy! On top of all that, each item was only five dollars, and that’s a price you can’t beat.
The atmosphere at Off the Grid is always the same, tons of people and lines. Despite all of that, it has a great variety for a Friday night dinner and a place to hang out with friends for an hour or so. There’s something different for almost any palette.
