Skyline College’s student Rachel Grgich grew up in a family of talented artists, and now she continues to express her gratuity to art as she keeps challenging herself to new heights.
Although she sticks to acting and painting mostly, Rachel feeds her curiosity by taking creative writing and piano classes at Skyline this semester. She is eager to extend her artistic skills to have
multiple self-expressing outlets.
“Although piano is difficult, now that I am older and have more patience I can have fun learning it, especially with hopes to one day share this talent with my brother because he is a musician, too,” said Rachel.
Rachel’s oldest brother Jordan Grgich is not only involved in a band, but also films and edits short films during his free time. This allows the entire Grgich family to interact, communicate, and spend
quality time together.
“Any image that strikes emotion that I want to preserve is one I’d like to paint, especially ones with great colors,” she replied when asked what inspires her to paint.
Frequent trips to the outdoors and museums keep Rachel stacking on inspiration. Another one of Rachel’s brothers, Johnny Grgich is a painter too and she also draws inspiration from his work, hoping to be as good as him one day.
Rachel once used her sense of humor and play on words to create a painting based on the cliché ‘the stakes are high.’ She sketched, and then painted two t-bone steaks sitting on a couch getting high.
“I painted it for my friend for her birthday. Our friendship is built on and feeds on comedy, so she loved it, it was perfect,” said Rachel.
Being aware that many artists use art for political messages, Rachel hopes that one day she can intertwine her artistic abilities to do the same.
“I hope to continue mixing all the arts I learn to keep me creative and expressing myself, but I’d like to do art with political messages one day, too. Being political at my age is important,” said Rachel.
Although Rachel has a career in the medical field, she holds her artistic expression as one of her priorities because it has been and continues to be her foundation to living a healthy lifestyle.
Because Rachel plans on being in a nursing program, she wants to keep expressing herself through art because it a healthy outlet and the best and most comfortable way for her to express herself.
