Sushi restaurants are a dime a dozen, especially here in the Bay Area. Ranging from affordable Chinese owned establishments to more authentic Japanese establishments, sushi definitely has a stronghold on the Peninsula.
Hiro Sushi falls somewhere in between affordable and authentic. This Korean-owned restaurant in downtown San Bruno features traditional selections of sashimi and nigiri as well as colossal Western rolls.
I dragged the girlfriend to Hiro’s on a quiet Sunday evening; while it was empty at first, the restaurant filled up rapidly as time passed.
As we entered, a trio of servers and the itamae, or sushi chef welcomed us with a loud greeting.
The décor was traditional with lots of wood overlay, rice paper-like sliding doors for private parties, sushi bar, and Zen-inspired furnishings. I cracked up when I heard Korean pop music softly playing in the background.
Between the two of us, we split a Hiro Dinner Special which included a variety of sashimi, nigiri, maki, and temaki. Since I factor the quality of the uni, or sea urchin when I evaluate sushi restaurants, I made sure to place an order for that as well.
Our food arrived fairly quickly. The fish was extremely fresh and tasted delicious. Uni was top notch as well. There was no skimping on food quality.
Service was excellent with attentive servers, perhaps a bit too attentive. I felt as if they were eyeing us while we dined.
Expect to spend about $35 or more for a solid dinner for two, but it’s worth every penny.
Overall, our visit to Hiro Sushi was a pleasant and tasty experience
