Taqueria Polanco
4931 Juniper Serra Blvd.
Colma, CA 94014
I first noticed the existence of this little taqueria nestled in the back of Serra Shopping Center about a year ago, but it was only recently that I decided to give it a chance. I’ll just say that after my first time eating there, the only thing that I regret was waiting so long to try it out.
Taqueria Polanco serves many of the typical dishes you would expect from a taqueria such as tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas, pupusas and a huge assortment of burritos. There are also the things you might not expect, like the Mexican Hot Dog, a “beef hot dog wrapped in bacon, served with a side of chips, pico de gallo, grilled onions, mustard, mayo and ketchup,” according to their menu.
After only a couple of visits, it’s pretty much impossible for me to leave without ordering their chile relleno. This simple meal consists of a fried pepper stuffed with cheese along with a side of beans and rice. The chile tastes great but I found it to be somewhat small for what is supposed to be the focus of the dish. Instead, it’s mostly the generous portion of rice and beans that really make the meal filling.
I also tried their Veggie Bur¬rito, which was a surprisingly interesting experience. I’m used to Mexican restaurants simply substituting meat with lettuce in their vegetarian burritos, but Po¬lanco has put a different spin on it and uses a mixture of broccoli, bell peppers and onions. The combination of the grilled vegetables and salsa make it much more flavorful than I thought a vegetarian burrito could possibly be.
It didn’t take long for me to get addicted to this place and I’ll definitely be going back soon. If you’re a fan of Mexican food and happen to be in Colma, Taqueria Polanco is definitely worth check¬ing out.
