The Relay for Life event, which was held from April 30 to May 1, was a success with 118 participants and fundraising upwards of $6,000 for the American Cancer Society. Participants and friends at the 24-hour event not only walked multiple miles but enjoyed live music, food, games and camaraderie.
The ambiance was full of life, with participants playing soccer and football on the field while others danced, some even in costume. Contests such as the four-legged race took place during the day, and tents were set up for the teams, as some participants stayed the entire 24 hours and continued to socialize throughout the night.
Participants at the event were lively and full of energy, eager to walk as soon as the event kicked off. The energy of the day was very upbeat rather than somber, and a fighting spirit was the main drive for the people who walked and ran. Some participants walked the entirety of the event.
Charity Walden, president of Beta Theta Omicron, was one of the participants who stayed overnight to walk. “It was nice to see a handful of the participants stay and participate overnight. It was a good feeling of community to be out there in the middle of the night knowing we were all doing it for a great cause,” Walden said.
Those who had an experience with cancer, either by knowing someone or having beaten the disease themselves, shared their stories and memories of loved ones who hadn’t been successful in the fight and added motivation to the already strong desire to find a cure.
“It was great. I felt good about making a difference,” Irina Glazman said.
As the sun went down, a vigil was held for those who fought or are still fighting cancer. Bags were made by the participants throughout the day in memory of and in support for those individuals. Each team had a flag with phrases such as “fight back,” “remember,” and “celebrate,” with which they walked for the final lap.
“I have never been so sore after something in my whole entire life. It was fun; I had a good time. People there were helpful, everyone came together, and I’m doing it again next year,” said Lacey Boltd, Skyline student and TRIO Vice President.
Fundraising for the event is still ongoing, as multiple teams have continued their efforts with events such as the school bowling night, which was held at Brentwood on May 2. There will be a wrap-up party at Johnny’s Pizza in San Bruno May 25 at 4 p.m., which anyone is welcome to come to and be a part of.
