A massive rainstorm hit the San Bruno and some of the surrounding areas two weeks ago causing flooding, power outages and some traffic problems.
Skyline College was also affected with flooding and the cancellation of some classes. Flooding occurred in Buildings 1 and 5 as well as in some offices according to a spokesperson from the Facilities Department.
“All the damage that occurred on campus was due to the high winds causing all the pine needles that hadn’t fallen to fall…causing the storm drains to back up,” said Paula Bray, supervisor of campus facilities.
Facilities responded to numerous calls for power outages the night before but did not foresee any problems with the storm drains.
“It’s because we had hurricane force winds that basically took the stuff that would take two or three storms to come out of the trees…to come out all at once,” Bray said.
After reviewing the damage from the flooding, there have been calls for the Facilities Department to be open 24 hours a day during storms. This should help alleviate any further problems with flooding by being able to check the storm drains throughout the evening.
