Pharrell Williams can do no wrong with his second album “G I R L”
These days, Pharrell Williams can really do no wrong.
It has been eight years since his last solo album, “In My Mind,” but somehow he managed to stay relevant throughout that time period. He was mainly seen producing for various artists such as Madonna, Shakira, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and even The Hives. Then he collaborated with legendary composer Hans Zimmer to score the animated film “Despicable Me.” Zimmer is a legend in the movie industry for his musical work in films such as “Gladiator,” “Inception,” and “12 Years a Slave,” the Acadamy Award winner for Best Picture.
Even after all of this, Pharrell still managed to produce two of the most successful pop songs in the history of the genre, “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke and “Get Lucky” with Daft Punk. After the enormous success of these two songs, Pharrell was once again in high demand by the public, which is where he rightfully belongs. Thankfully, he capitalized on this demand with the release of his sophmore album, “G I R L.”
Just by looking at all the names of all ten songs on the album, “G I R L” is about girls. Such a simple concept is executed flawlessly by Williams as this album stands as his ode to women of all colors and sizes. The album contains songs that are meant to uplift women, make obvious sexual references, and is aimed to make you dance.
The first song, “Marilyn Monroe” is more of a proclamation that the beauty of certain famous women isn’t necessarily what he wants. Other songs such as “Lost Queen” and “It Girl” follow this same format. It is refreshing to hear women receive uplifting words from a male perspective mainly because it has become a rare occurrence in this day and age of modern music.
On the other side, this album will make you dance. You can try to fight it as hard as you can, but the music on this album will make you move. Such up tempo songs such as “Hunter” and “Come Get It Bae” have such an infectious rhythm to them that it is hard to not play this album over and over again.
Then there’s “Happy,” already one of the biggest songs of the year and should have won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. “Happy” has been the number one song in almost every country, is on every radio station across the world, and hasn’t lost its momentum even though it was released back in November on the “Despicable Me 2” soundtrack. The song works as a fusion of neo-soul, funk, pop, and a dash of gospel. “Happy” stands as Pharrell’s most successful release to date and should stay that way for years to come.
Overall, “G I R L” reminds the world of the talents that Pharrell Williams possesses and how he can execute those talents in a full album. While it is hard to believe this is just his second solo album, Williams has already established himself as a musical genius. Luckily for his fans both old and new, “G I R L” simply adds to his legacy.
