Skyline’s Women’s soccer team won 8-3 in their first home game of the season against College of Marin last Friday Sept. 6 thanks to five goals from freshman midfielder Celeste Henry.

After a tough weekend in San Luis Obispo, with a shortage of players and several injuries, this game showed a huge rejoice for the Trojans.

With the rest of the team back on the field, they were able to dominate the game, evenly scoring four goals a half, and the bad weather only further drove them to victory.

“Because this is one of the windiest schools to play at, other teams won’t know it until they show up,” Skyline forward Sierra Olsen said.

Daily practice at Skyline prepared them to be masters at playing in difficult weather conditions. The low-lying fog, and strong winds present during the game were nothing new to the Trojans.

Twelve minutes in, Mariners center forward Sophia Maso stepped up taking the first goal for Marin, after an interception from Skyline. Only a few minutes later, Skyline tied the game with Henry taking a shot after a long pass from Olsen.

Skyline took over Marin’s defense and piled up three more goals, one being a penalty shot by Celeste minutes before half time. This gave time for strategy from both sides and really amped up the atmosphere for the following half.

Both teams must have motivated their players wearing number seven, as they became serious advocates for the second half. Skyline’s midfielder Braedyn Stone found many through lines bringing the ball up the field, assisting three more goals for Skyline. On Marin’s end, 5-foot-9 Maso, pushed through Skyline’s midfield and defense for a large portion of the game to bring up the score. Seven minutes before the game came to a close, she found a way in with help from Marin’s previous scorer, Juliana Cortinhas.

Skyline goalkeeper, Genevieve McVanner-Rogers, composed the offensive line, used advice from her coach, uplifting the rest of the team, “He just tries to boost our confidence, he tells us he knows that we know what we’re doing and we need to perform the way that we know we can.”

She saved a handful of shots, and was also a great help in aligning the rest of the team to victory, and one of our members in particular found her way to reach five goals throughout the game.

Aided professionally by Olsen, Stone, and Molly Moock, Celeste Henry made a big impact throughout the game for the Trojans and shared her insight on what gets her in that mindset.

“It’s something I’ve been practicing since I was in middle school because it was a big thing for me to make those shots like the big players,” Henry said. “The other thing that goes through my mind mainly, is I have to have that confidence to make the shot, otherwise it just messes up the whole feeling.”

Overall, Skyline’s head coach for the women’s team, Kevin Corsiglia was pleased with his team making efficient progress throughout the game,

“It’s good to come home and see the practice that we have been putting in, start to pay off. We saw good keep possession of the ball, and offensively, we did a good job of squaring up to the target of the goal, taking quality shots,”

Henry put it best, “Our chemistry today was important to be able to set the tone for the rest of the season.”
