The Skyline Trojans men’s basketball team has been undefeated for nine consecutive games this season.
There are many factors that contributed to their successful games on the road and back at home. A player in particular has been getting himself attention not just by the opposing teams and the spectators in the auditorium. His name is Elijah White and he’s currently the starting point guard for the Trojans.
White had the interest of playing basketball at a very young age, ever since his elementary school teacher handed him a flyer for a youth league. He showed great interest and so his mom signed him up and took him to youth league games.
“When I was in elementary school one of my teachers passed put a little flyer for the Daly City little leagues, and ever since I seen that I always wanted to play basketball. So once my mom knew I was interested she signed me up, took me to the little leagues and ever since then I’ve been hooping” White said.
White has been putting down an average of 19 points a game; also he’s been laying out the assists for other players on the team. Being a scoring threat and an exceptional decision maker, has resulted in consistent play from White.
So far he has shown improvement since his first year of playing at Skyline, by being the floor leader and demonstrating excellent leadership skills. Over the span of the previous semesters; both head coach Justin Piergrossi and assistant coach Eddy Harris have seen White mature, which makes him favorable not just to them and the players, but also makes the scouts highly interested.
“He’s doing a great job of combining of scoring points, he’s our leading scorer, but also playing as a leader and a facilitator on the floor,” Piergrossi said.
“He’s pretty much our floor leader, our general, captain, sort of speak on the floor. We know what to expect from him,” Harris said.
To his teammates and the coaches, White has proven to be a charismatic guy on and off the court. He demonstrates impressive leadership skills by being vocal and supportive. They see him as a serious player with a healthy sense of humor, and those are a combination of qualities they like in a leader.
“Elijah is a very funny guy, he’s a really good guy too. I know he has my back because we went to high school together. Very cool guy, always fun to be around.” Teammate Basil Abuyahyu said.
For White his plans are to acquire a scholarship to a major university while continuing to progress his education and still play the game he loves. As of now he has no declared major, but it appears majoring in business is catching his attention. Whatever choice he makes, he will have it planned out by the end of the next semester.
