Kayla Crittendon is a certified athletic trainer and former Skyline College student. After earning her
B.S. in athletic training at San Jose State University, Crittendon returned to Skyline where she works
for the athletics department.
She was quite active during her time as a Skyline student; Crittendon played women’s volleyball and basketball from 2007-2008. In addition, she interned at Skyline’s athletic training room before transferring with her A.A to SJSU.
“In high school, I had a bad athletic trainer,” said Crittendon. “I am working to be a better athletic
trainer than he ever was.” Becoming an athletic trainer was not without difficulty.
“Maybe it’s the fact I’m a girl in a male dominated field, but it’s hard to obtain jobs over people that have more experience or are male,” she said. Crittendon also cited the challenge of being female in a world of male sports.
Athletic training has had its bright sides as well, however.
One such incident is when Crittendon was interning at College of San Mateo. She worked with an athlete who had broken his arm; a year later, she met him at SJSU where both of them had transferred.
“He thanked me for helping him when he got injured and he gave me the biggest hug,” said Crittendon.
